Work has started on a new primary school thanks to the help of pupils.
Denbighshire County Council held a turf cutting ceremony in Clocaenog for a new single site school for Ysgol Carreg Emlyn, which is currently located on two sites at Clocaenog and Cyffylliog.
The project forms part of more than £90million of investment in Denbighshire’s schools within the wider 21st Century Schools programme funded by Denbighshire County Council and the Welsh Government.
Bodelwyddan-based Wynne Construction is the main contractor appointed to carry out the works.
Councillor Huw Hilditch-Roberts, the Council’s lead member for Education, Children and Young People and the Welsh Language, said: “Work starting on the new school is tremendous news for pupils at Ysgol Carreg Emlyn and for future generations living in Clocaenog, Cyffylliog and the surrounding areas.
“It was great to see pupils, teachers and community leaders join together for the turf cutting at the new school site.
“We recognise this has been a long time coming but we are delivering on our promise to press ahead with these ambitious plans.
“Making Denbighshire a place where younger people want to live and making sure they have the skills to do so is a priority in our Corporate Plan and this new school helps us achieve that.”
Other projects funded under the 21st Century Schools programme include a new building for Rhyl High School and Ysgol Tir Morfa, significant improvement works at Bodnant Community School, Prestatyn and Ysgol Glan Clwyd, St Asaph as well as a new school building at Glasdir, Ruthin for Ysgol Pen Barras and Rhos Street School.
Chris Wynne, managing director at Wynne Construction, said: “We’re delighted to be, once again, working with Denbighshire County Council and in the village of Clocaenog for this project. Now the pupils have helped us start the work, we will look forward to arranging site visits during construction, so they will be able to see how their new school is progressing.
“We will continue to provide employment and training for local people, securing existing jobs through our locally-based supply chain, and to make sure that the benefits from this investment are spread as widely as possible.”
